The Pousada Convento de Belmonte was built on the ruins of Nossa Senhora da Esperança Convent which dates back to Portugal´s distant past and from where the explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral set off to discover Brazil, taking with him the statue of Senhora da Esperança.
In its décor, this modern Pousada, situated one mile south of Belmonte on the hillside of the mountain Serra da Esperança, has maintained the historical inheritance of the convent dating back to the 13th Century.
All the materials used -the stone, wood, and ironwork - have been skilfully chosen, not only for their sobriety but also for their clarity and tone ,so that they re-create an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, in a unique space where one can hear the silence, feel the history, and breathe in the purity of the mountain air.
24 rooms (all with different names of friars) and the suite known as the Guardian (the name given to the Chief Abbot) have been tastefully decorated by Adelaide Rebello de Andrade, and transformed into a historical Pousada by Luis Rebelo de Andrade.
The swimming pool built in stone has a breathtaking view of the Zêzere valley and the Serra da Estrela.
